Editing » Recommendation for free video editing software

Hi,

I have always used AVC for this, but the latest iteration has just muddled what used to be an incredibly useful and intuitive UI.
What other programs to people use for video editing? I'm looking at free---nothing fancy here, just trimming, converting from one format to another--I'm pretty sure that this is all I do with a video editor?

Please help.
