MINNEAPOLIS -- After playing 12 consecutive games out of the All-Star break, the Baltimore Orioles were originally due for a day off Thursday before beginning a quick three-game road trip in Toronto. That off day will have to wait until Monday. Before beginning a crucial series against the Blue Jays, the Orioles first must make up a rain postponed game against the Minnesota Twins at Target Field on Thursday night. Its this time of year where theres a decent amount of wear and tear, Orioles outfielder Mark Trumbo said. You just have to gut it out. Thats what you have to do every year. You feel fortunate to have the ability to play every game, but this is kind of the grind that they talk about. On May 9, inclement weather cancelled what was to be the first of a three-game series between the Orioles and the Twins. Instead of playing a doubleheader later in the week, both teams agreed it might be easier to make up the game near the end of July. The game doesnt mean much to Minnesota, which has the worst record in the American League and is coming off a two-game sweep at the hands of baseballs worst team, the Atlanta Braves. The Twins fell behind by seven runs early in the Wednesday game but battled back late, advancing the tying run to second base with two outs in the eighth inning. However, Minnesota couldnt find one more clutch hit, and it dropped its third consecutive game.We pecked away at them, got back into the game, but they added on a couple, which ended up being the difference in the game, Twins manager Paul Molitor said. We had chances right down to the end, but coming back from down seven is a tough task. The stakes this weekend are large for the Orioles. Baltimore heads into Thursday two games ahead of Toronto for first place in the American League East, 2 1/2 games in front of the Boston Red Sox. The Orioles aim to avoid falling to Minnesota, which won the final two meetings at Target Field back in May.The Orioles hope right-hander Ubaldo Jimenez (5-9, 7.38 ERA) can get his season on track against an opponent he has had plenty of success against in his career. Jimenez was yanked from the rotation after allowing five runs in just 1 1/3 innings against the Los Angeles Angels on July 8, and he hasnt pitched since.Jimenez, just off the paternity list after the birth of his first daughter, recently made a mechanical adjustment designed to allow him to better repeat his delivery.Im hoping its a positive for him, because anything thats a little different look that you havent normally done when youre struggling sometime can work positively, Orioles manager Buck Showalter told the Baltimore Sun. We had some -- not a whole lot of options -- but I think he might surprise us. Not me, but some people. You try to pick a place where he feels comfortable and has been successful. That would be the best place for him.Jimenez is 5-3 in 10 appearances against the Twins in his career, including a 4-1 mark with a 1.82 ERA in six starts at Target Field.Minnesota will counter with Kyle Gibson, coming off perhaps the best outing of his career on Friday against the Red Sox. Gibson (3-6, 4.67 ERA) allowed just two hits and one run over eight innings in the victory, not surrendering a hit after the first inning. In four career starts against Baltimore, Gibson is 1-1 with a 3.74 ERA. He lost to the Orioles in his first start this year, yielding four runs in five innings on April 6 at Camden Yards. Willie McCovey Jersey . Nigeria beat surprise package Ethiopia 2-0 in the second leg of their playoff for a comfortable 4-1 aggregate victory. Victor Moses converted a 20th-minute penalty after an Ethiopian handball, and Victor Obinna made certain of Nigerias place in Brazil with his powerful free kick in the 82nd at UJ Esuene Stadium. Derek Holland Jersey . The All-Pro lineman got the leg bent under him while trying to make a tackle during the first half of a 22-20 overtime loss at Miami on Thursday night. The medical staff initially thought hed torn the ligament, and the test a day later in Cincinnati confirmed it. http://www.sfgiantsrookiestore.com/Giants-Evan-Longoria-Kids-Jersey/ . Denis Coderre, the former federal MP who was elected mayor on Nov. 3, has drawn the ire of some Montreal Canadiens. During last nights game he tweeted: "Hello? Can we get a one-way ticket to (minor-league) Hamilton for David Desharnais please. Alen Hanson Jersey . Sgt. Eric ONeal says most of the arrests at Monday nights game were for public drunkenness, though one person was taken into custody on suspicion of trying to steal a seat from the stadium. Willie Mays Jersey . On Mar. 16, coming off a "fight of the year" performance at UFC 154 the previous November, St-Pierre faced Nick Diaz at UFC 158 in what would be his eighth defence of the welterweight title. Using his superior athleticism, St-Pierre cruised to a five round, unanimous decision victory setting up a much-anticipated title defence against number one contender Johny Hendricks. There were bound to be days like this. There were bound to be days when the ball didnt reverse, when the batsmen didnt err and when the chances didnt stick. There were bound to be days when Indias daunting batting line-up came out on top and taking 20 wickets in a match looked an almost impossible challenge. The scoreboard doesnt really show it, but England bowled well on the third day in Rajkot. Chris Woakes, generating impressive pace from the sedate surface, struck Cheteshwar Pujara three times on the helmet or upper body, while Stuart Broad maintained an immaculate line and length and threw himself around in the field with admirable commitment. Both demonstrated fitness, control and resolve in delivering 43 overs between them for a combined total of 83 runs. Nobody could reasonably ask for more from either of them. Our seamers have done a fantastic job in tough conditions, Englands assistant coach Paul Farbrace said. Our plan was to stifle India. This is a very good batting pitch and they are outstanding batsmen, so our plan was to be patient and make it as hard as possible for them to score runs. We were never going to be attacking today. We made no excuses for the fact we tried to make it as difficult for India as possible. We gained late reward for our perseverance. Weve had a very good day today. The spinners were much improved, too. We know they are not world beaters but, by conceding between 2.93 and 3.25 runs per over, they proved no more expensive than their Indian counterparts (who conceded between 2.86 and 4.17) and, in Adil Rashids case, beat the bat a couple of times along the way. It was easily his best display of the tour and perhaps the best of his Test career to date.He needed this performance. There were signs in Bangladesh that his captains trust in him was waning and, when he came on for a couple of overs at the end of day two, amid a fine googly, he threw in both a long-hop and a full toss. But on the third day, his control was improved and his googly beat the batsmen more than once. He fully deserved his late reward. Our spinners took a bit of stick in Bangladesh for not holding their line and length, Farbrace said. But theyve bowled particularly well today. In the past there has been lots of talk about Adil bowling a bit slowly. But the work he has done with the bowling coach, Saqlain Mushtaq, has been about trajectory, not pace. So he has been aiming to get the ball above the eye-line, allowing it to spin and getting the ball up there for batsmen to drive. The key thing is that he has learned quickly. He has worked hard on trying to be more disciplined. He was calm between deliveries and set in his plans and he has bowled consistently. He didnt rush it or try and bowl too quickly. But he spun the ball out of the hand and got a nice bit of drop. Its only one day and were looking for consistency across the series, but he did have a good day.Such control at least slowed Indias progress. While they may still go past Englands first-innings total, it will take them well into the afternoon of day four to do so.dddddddddddd. Little more than a couple of sessions of decent batting should, therefore, be enough to make the game safe for England on the final day, though you dont have to go back very far to find an occasion when that was beyond them. While there is, at present, little sign of this pitch deteriorating as anticipated, it is not impossible they may yet come to regret those sloppy middle-order wickets they squandered on day two.Certainly Farbrace still expects batting to become much more difficult.Things start to happen around tea-time on day four and on day five they can happen quickly, Farbrace said. I think both sides are expecting the wicket to turn more. The cracks have opened over the last three days and some of them have started to crumble, so you might start to see some variable bounce as well. When youre 200 ahead, you hope that happens. In a perfect world, England would have a bit more pace or variation in their attack. There had been talk that Sam Curran, the Surrey left-arm swing bowler, might be added to the squad. It was not so much with a view to him becoming a realistic playing option, but so the England coaching team - who have little opportunity to watch county cricket - might take a closer look at him. Aged 18, he has clearly been identified as a player of great potential but, for one reason or another, that idea was shelved. England maintain they will only call for reinforcements in the event of injuries. But it is hard to imagine many bowlers unlocking this surface as it is. Perhaps a Murali or Warne; perhaps Malcolm Marshall or Mitchell Johnson at his best. But such bowlers dont come along too often and you cannot judge these by those standards. Even James Anderson, who spent part of the day acting as substitute fielder, would have struggled. The one thing that may concern England a little is their inability to gain any swing, be it conventional or reverse. Indias seamers managed some reverse for a while but England, without Anderson or, for much of the day, Ben Stokes, managed no more than a hint of movement. That meant they were never able to fully benefit from their probing line with the batsmen defending expertly without any meaningful threat to their outside edges. And while Pujara struggled a bit against Woakes short ball, it never prevented him coming forward as required to the full ball.Stokes continued to show the aftermath of the cramp that bothered him on day two. He produced one stiff-looking, loose spell early in the day and then was hardly seen again until the evening session. According to the team management, the problem is exacerbated by his difficulty in eating during play as it leaves him feeling uncomfortable. But in these gruelling conditions, it is essential he finds a way to replenish himself. With bat and ball, England are greatly diminished without him. ' ' '
