The never-ending injury woes continue for the New York Mets. The team announced that starter Steven Matz has been scratched from his scheduled start against the Philadelphia Phillies on Friday and replaced by rookie Gabriel Ynoa.Matz said he experienced pain that was a little different from regular soreness Thursday morning, a day after a 20-pitch bullpen session. After he reported the issue to the training staff, the decision was made not to start him Friday. The trainer walked into my office, and I started shaking my head, Mets manager Terry Collins said.New Yorks rotation has been beset by season-ending injuries to both Matt Harvey and Jacob deGrom.?Matz has been kept out of action since an Aug. 14 start against the San Diego Padres.Well see what the next few days has in store, Collins said of Matz. The left-hander said the Mets had not discussed shutting him down yet and that he is still hopeful of returning.Collins expects Matz to make a doctors visit for further evaluation. The manager termed the shoulder issue a delicate situation and spoke of putting him on a rehab program to strengthen his shoulder and his back. Matzs last MRI, done about a month ago, came back clean. Another had not been scheduled as of yet.Ynoa allowed one run and struck out eight in 4 2/3 innings in Sundays win over the Minnesota Twins. His major league experience consists of 10 innings and 10 runs allowed over seven appearances. If Ynoa pitches, the Mets rotation would include three rookies -- Ynoa, Thursday starter Seth Lugo and Robert Gsellman -- none of whom was projected to be in the teams plans for 2016. If the Mets made the postseason and advanced to the National League Division Series, its likely that two of them would be needed to start. "It didnt seem like he was lost or anything ... he didnt stand out, which was a good thing," Rivers said after the first practice of organized team activities, which are practices in helmets, jerseys and shorts, but no pads. Teo did get matched up with star tight end Antonio Gates a few times, which was "a quick welcome, Day 1," Rivers said. "Today was a good first day," said inside linebacker Donald Butler, who will be paired with Teo in the Chargers 3-4 defence. The only person who didnt get to talk about Teos performance was Teo himself. The team pulled an end run and kept Teo away from a large media contingent that hoped to find out from the player how he felt after mixing it up with vets for the first time. As Teo walked off the field, an assistant coach put an arm around the rookies shoulders and said he had to get to a meeting. Teo, the linebacker from Notre Dame, was picked by the Chargers in the second round after slipping out of the opening round in part because of a poor performance in a blowout loss to Alabama in the national championship game. He also was part of a girlfriend hoax that drew national headlines. If the Chargers can protect Rivers on the left side of the offensive line as welll as theyre protecting Teo from the media, they might end their three-year playoff drought.dddddddddddd The Chargers have taken unprecedented steps to limit Teos time in front of the microphones. The team refused to let reporters do customary one-on-ones with him after his introductory news conference during the draft, and has continued to refuse to set up interviews with the linebacker. Teo did speak after the first practice of rookie minicamp on Friday but was the only player off-limits on Monday. "We make decisions that we think are best for the organization," rookie head coach Mike McCoy said. "Like every other player, weve got a plan and we move forward with it. He addressed everyone the other day. We have a schedule for him and were going to follow it. We have a belief in what were doing and the way were going to take care of our players." Teo worked with the first-team defence. "Hes done a nice job," McCoy said. "It was a good start for him this weekend. We have big expectations for him coming in here and stepping in and playing for us. Hes in there with the ones right now and were going to see how much he can pick up." Said Butler: "Obviously, we have high expectations for him coming in and playing and hopefully he can get our system down and come in and be productive." ' ' '
