HOUSTON -- Two days after his 40th birthday, Bartolo Colon pitched with youthful verve. Colon struck out a season-high nine in seven scoreless innings, and the Oakland Athletics completed a sweep of the Houston Astros with a 6-2 win. Oaklands Nate Freiman, who was with the Astros in spring training as a Rule 5 selection, homered, doubled and drove in three runs as the As improved to 9-0 against the Astros this season. Colon, who was hitting 94-95 mph on the radar throughout the game, said through an interpreter that the way he pitches, sometimes he likes to change his velocity. Oakland manager Bob Melvin said Colons velocity surprised him. "Every now and then you could see him peek up there and see what the velocity was," Melvin said. "There are certain things that we can see when he knows that hes got his velocity, a little something that he does differently. Really for a guy wholl touch 93 and youll see a 94 sprinkled in every now and then, he hovered around 94 and hit 95. So 40 years old, pretty impressive." Colon (5-2) won his second straight start, scattering nine hits. He worked seven innings for the second straight start and for the fourth time in 10 starts this season. Colon improved to 3-0 with a 1.89 ERA in his three starts against the Astros this season and 4-0 with a 2.53 ERA against the AL West. Melvin thought Colon was economical with his pitches despite the hits. "He knows how to make a pitch when he needs to and I thought his stuff actually was as good today as weve seen all year," Melvin said. "There are certain games where he knows that he has the velocity and when he can go to that, and there are certain games where he pitches a little differently. That all comes with experience and knowing yourself very well." Freiman said he has been working in the batting cages and doing everything he can to be ready for when he is called upon to play. "Its something that Im excited to learn how to be a role player on this team," Freiman said. "Right now that role is to get an occasional start against left-handed starters." Dating to 2007, Oakland has won 11 straight against Houston, tied for the third longest winning streak against one team in As history. "Right now if you were to look you would say, yes, they have our number," Houston manager Bo Porter said. "Theyve beat us nine times in nine tries and today they were just better than us." The Astros are 14-36 in their first year in the AL, their worst 50-game start in club history. After leaving runners on third in two of the first three innings, Oakland sent nine batter to the plate in a five-run fourth against Dallas Keuchel (1-2). Yoenis Cespedes led off by reaching second base on an error by second baseman Jose Altuve. Josh Donaldson followed with an RBI single up the middle. After Jed Lowrie singled, Seth Smith had a run-scoring double and Freiman made it 4-0 with another double. Crisp added a two-out RBI single. Freiman made it 6-0 with a home run to centre field with one out in the in sixth. J.D. Martinez had a one-out double off reliever Ryan Cook in the eighth and Chris Carter hit a sacrifice fly to cut it to 6-2 but that was all Houston would get. Keuchel went six innings, giving up six runs -- four earned -- and a season-high nine hits. He struck out four. "I think it was a mixture between me not locating and they taking advantage of it," Keuchel said. "Throw away that fourth inning and its a 1-0 ballgame. I felt good today, but give credit to them." Jason Castro had a career-high four hits and went 10 for 12 in the series for Houston. Castro became the first Astros player since Ty Wigginton in 2008 to have three consecutive games of at least three hits. "I know my strengths, and part of this process is trying to match yourself up with whoever youre facing," Castro said. "Its an in-game evolution where youre always making adjustments, and Im feeling pretty comfortable with making those adjustments on the fly right now." NOTES: Oakland OF Josh Reddick will begin a rehab assignment Monday at Class-A Stockton, Melvin said. Reddick has been on the disabled list since May 8 with a sprained right wrist. . ARLINGTON, Texas -- Prince Fielder wiped away tears, pointed to his two sons sitting next to him and talked about being in big league clubhouses since he was their age.Still wearing a neck brace 12 days after a second cervical fusion, the burly 32-year-old Fielder wept Wednesday as he said health issues were forcing him to end his 12-season career. To not be able to play, its going to be tough, said Fielder, once one of the most durable players in the majors. His sons -- one who turns 12 next week and the other 10 -- sat with him at the podium, mostly with their heads down and also shedding tears. They have been regulars at the ballpark with their dad, much like he often was with his father, Cecil, a slugger who played 13 seasons for five teams. The kids actually love baseball more than Prince. It was a sad moment, teammate Elvis Andrus said. You rarely see him like that. All of Fielders teammates, along with Rangers coaches and staff, filled the interview room to support him. When the Rangers acquired him in November 2013 for second baseman Ian Kinsler, the first baseman had played at least 157 games every year since 2006, and appeared in 809 of 810 possible games the five seasons But Fielder was limited to 289 games in Texas because of two neck surgeries in just more than two years.Even though I know I struggled personally this year, this was actually the most fun Ive ever had and the best Ive ever felt mentally about baseball, Fielder said. Thats the only thing that really hurts about not being able to play is that my brain was really good, with my body, just, you know, it just gave out.Fielder will finish his career with 319 career homers, the same number that his father had playing one more season but 141 fewer games. The only other father-son duo with more than 300 homers each is Bobby and Barry Bonds. After being limited to 42 games in his Rangers debut in 2014, Fielder talked about how much he missed baseball and returned last season with a revived passion for the game.Primarily a designated hitter in 2015, Fielder hit .305 with 23 homers and 98 RBI in 158 games, though midway through the season again started feeling symptoms related to neck issues. He then struggled throughout this year, hitting a career-low .dddddddddddd.212 with eight homers and 44 RBI in 89 games until finally getting an exam three weeks ago while the team was in Los Angeles.Scott Boras, Fielders agent, said they figured it was just a precautionary exam and that maybe he would spend some time on the disabled list, but nothing like this.An MRI showed a herniation between Fielders C4 and C5 disks, just above where he first had surgery in May 2014. Doctors were already recommending that he quit playing before the second surgery July 29.To just suddenly have the lights turned out like that ... were pretty steadied and pretty prepared, but to get that phone call, I was really taken back, Boras said.Fielder was only two years into a $214 million, nine-year contract when he got to Texas. That guaranteed deal goes through 2020, for $24 million each season. While no longer playing, Fielder didnt formally retire, meaning the Rangers would have him on the 60-day disabled list during the regular season but would have to add him to their 40-man roster each offseason until the end of the contract. The Tigers owe Texas $6 million a year as part of their 2013 deal. The Rangers are responsible for the remaining $18 million, though about half of their liability could be covered by disability insurance.Over 1,611 major league games with the Brewers (2005-11), Tigers (2012-13) and Rangers (2014-16), Fielder was a six-time All-Star who hit .283 with 1,028 RBI.When the game is taken away from you like that, I dont think that its easy to handle, 37-year-old Texas third baseman Adrian Beltre said. Its easier when you yourself say, `You know what, I had enough. Im going to go home and be with my family. But when you go home because you cant do it anymore, thats different.Fielder said that when he gets the brace off -- This is killing me, this is terrible, he said -- he will be back with the AL West leaders.Theyve got work to do, Ive got some cheerleading to do, Fielder said. And hopefully win the World Series and pop the champagne.---AP Sports Writer Schuyler Dixon contributed to this report. ' ' '
