LONDON Cheap Air Max 720 , May 7 (Xinhua) -- Commemorations took place Thursday to mark the 100th anniversary of the sinking by a German submarine of the ocean liner the Lusitania.
The Lusitania, on its way from New York to its home port of Liverpool, sank in a matter of minutes on May 7, 1915, after it was hit by a torpedo fired from the submarine off the coast of Ireland. It was regarded as the world's most luxurious liner of the time.
Around 1,200 people died in the attack and another 771 were rescued. The sinking is said to have prompted the U.S. to join in World War One.
At 3:30 a.m. local time Thursday the Cunard liner Queen Victoria Cheap Air Max 360 , on a cruise around the British Isles, paused to pay respects and lay flowers above the spot 18 kilometers off the Irish coast where the wreck of the Cunard liner lies deep on the seabed.
When news of the outrage reached Liverpool there were riots and a number of German businesses and shops in the city were attacked. German businesses were also attacked in London and Manchester.
The Lusitania was one of the largest ships in the world, but its sinking never captured the profile given to the sinking three years earlier of another Liverpool-registered Cunard liner, the Titanic.
In Liverpool a special service was held at the city's parish church on the waterfront, also known as the sailors' church.
At 14:10 p.m. local time a minute's silence was observed, marking the exact moment the torpedo struck. It was followed by a short walk of remembrance to Liverpool Pier Head where the recovered propeller of the Lusitania is a permanent reminder of the sinking.
Currently a Lusitania Exhibition is attracting big crowds to the Merseyside Maritime Museum in Liverpool.
Museum spokesman Ian Murphy said: "In 1915 Cheap Nike Air Max 270 , Lusitania was the world's most famous ship and the jewel in Liverpool's crown. Her sinking sent shockwaves around the globe and was said to have influenced America's entry to the war."

A painting by Liverpool artist Anthony Brown, whose great-grandfather was on the Lusitania's final voyage, was also displayed for the first time.
