Jason Day recovered from a slow start to defeat Graeme McDowell 3&2 in his WGC-Dell Match Play group opener, but appeared to injure his back late on in his victory. The world No 2 bounced back from being two holes down after four to see off the Northern Irishman, but had to head straight into the clubhouse for treatment on a strain incurred while hitting his tee shot at the 16th.McDowell had made a strong start after holing a five-footer at the third and being awarded the next hole after a wayward tee shot from Day, but the Australian responded by driving the par-four next and two-putting for birdie. Back-to-back wins at the eighth and ninth saw the PGA champion reach the turn one ahead, with Day doubling his advantage at the next when McDowells tee shot ended up in the hazard. Day looked in discomfort at the 16th Day moved three ahead at the 12th and maintained his lead with three consecutive pars, before looking in pain and clinging on to his lower back after his tee shot at the next. After climbing gingerly into a fairway bunker, Day found the green and two-putted from distance to post the par needed for the win.The Australian now sits top of group two alongside Thongchai Jaidee, who came from behind to post three birdies along the back nine to secure a 2&1 victory over Paul Casey.Day left the Austin Country Club in Texas without speaking to reporters. His agent later sent a statement that Day had tweaked his back, had some work done on it, was pleased with winning and was getting prepared to play on Thursday. Before getting treatment, Day told the Australian Associated Press: Its really hard to play with searing pain in both sides of your lower back.Just my back has seized up and I need to get inside right away for treatment and see whats wrong. Jaidee is the 36th seed this week Early shockJason Dufner produced an early surprise by defeating fifth-seed Rickie Fowler 2&1 to set the pace at the top of group five.Dufner was three ahead through 11 but found himself back all-square when he three-putted the 15th, only to reply by birdieing the next and sealing the win with a 28-foot putt at the last.I played a lot of good holes today, Dufner said. I feel like I played maybe a little bit better than Rickie. Jason Dufner (left) got his week off to a winning start Im just happy to win the match. Anyone thats in this field can win one of the matches at any point. I had control of the match maybe a little bit more than he did today. The other match in the group saw BMW PGA champion Byeong Hun An let a three-hole advantage slip over the closing stretch to finish all-square with Scott Piercy. TWICKENHAM -- England will not be getting carried away despite going the year unbeaten and have a way to go before they can begin being compared with the World Cup-winning class of 2003, according to Eddie Jones.Jones has masterminded a 13-match winning run since taking the job last December but has challenged his side to improve in the wake of their 37-21 win over Australia.England were on the ropes in the first half and Jones said they were hanging in there but they answered Jones challenge to improve their work rate to take the second half 24-5 and their 13th Test on the bounce. But Jones will ensure England do not get carried away with the acclaim that comes with completing their first unbeaten year since 1992. Were progressing, Jones said.We cant get too ahead of ourselves. Were only the number two team in the world and we want to be number one. Weve got a long way to go before we achieve that. And were hell-bent on achieving that. Weve got the talent here. Its just whether we get the desire and cohesion right. Thats what were aiming to do.Jones says England are yet to develop players deemed world-class but did praise Ben Youngs performance against Australia and said he put his hand up for the British & Irish Lions scrum-half shirt. He was also impressed by Nathan Hughes performance at No.8 in what was his first start.ddddddddddddAnd despite the pre-match scrutiny of the scrum, Jones, who paused a while before answering, said Jaco Peypers interpretation of the front-row was okay.Jones has now challenged this group of England players to take their Test form back to domestic rugby and continue to state their claim for international recognition ahead of the Six Nations where they will be aiming to match their 2016 feat of winning the grand slam.Saturdays victory over Australia takes their winning run to 14, 13 coming under Jones, and matches the record set by Clive Woodwards 2003 crop. But Jones believes they have plenty to achieve before they can be compared to that group that won the World Cup.The 2003 side were a much better side than we are at the moment, Jones said. They had a very consistent scrum and line-out, we dont have that yet but we are getting there but they were a much better side than we are.We have got until the 2nd November 8pm Japan time 2019 to get ready and that is what we are aiming at -- we have got to be at our best that night. It is 1020 days. Every day counts If players dont challenge themselves they wont be here and that is the reality of it. ' ' '
